More information about the START-UP&INNOVATION DAY will follow soon.

START-UP & INNOVATION DAY Recap 2021: Live hands-on bike innovations

EUROBIKE back as a live trade show with its own START-UP AREA – the live and physical START-UP & INNOVATION DAY 2021 congress focused firmly on hardware. While in recent years, digitalisation and service-related topics have dominated the agenda, this year’s talks and presentations concentrated on the innovative core of the industry. Hardware innovations are creating new areas of use and opening up alternative forms of mobility and contributing to the sustainable transition of the transport sector. What role will bikes play in future? Which position will bicycles have in the micromobility spectrum given the development of so-called xcycles? How can an industry that produces sustainable means of transport become more sustainable itself? What are the challenges when it comes to funding, development and the use of new materials?

Turning the bike world upside down

On the first day of the last EUROBIKE before the relocation to Frankfurt on Main, start-up companies and bike industry innovation departments got together to consider the latest developments, the power of innovation and discuss funding and cooperation measures.

The day kicked off with an inspiring talk from a mobility expert from outside of the bike industry. Georgia Yexley from large sharing company TIER looked at how micromobility concepts are challenging the car and should be considered as a something more than a means of transport.

Bike guru Markus Storck explored hardware in depth and presented the new brand Cyklær. The cooperation with Porsche Digital has resulted in a fully networked, digital e-bike for urban and sport use. There are many developments in material technology too. Whether wood, coffee capsules or even fungal cells – the creative rethinking of materials knows no bounds.

Kevin Mayne (Cycling Industries Europe) and Ralf Kindermann (formerly with Internetstores) looked at funding issues for mobility projects – the large number of questions clearly showed that this is an area to be expanded in future. During the large panel discussion at the end of the conference, the industry’s most important current issues were discussed, before the innovation day finished with the EUROBIKE Award Ceremony, where the best start-ups were naturally also announced.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the START-UP & INNOVATION DAY was more international and more diverse than ever. With speakers from England, the Netherlands, France, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium and Germany – there was a definite pan-European programme. And the move from studio livestream in 2020 to the big EUROBIKE 2021 stage is just a taste of what’s to come next year. At EUROBIKE 2022 from 13 - 17 July in Frankfurt, start-ups play a central role in the concept.
