THE MEETING POINT FOR CYCLING TOURISM
COVID19 led to transformative changes in the touristic key sectors represented at the TRAVEL TALK. While the tourism and event sector was struggling immensely during the pandemic, the bicycle proved itself to be a resilient and safe mode of transport. What are the consequences for the cycling tourism sector and how panic-proof are the different actors set up? More than ever it is important to focus on collaboration between cities and regions to create space for resonance and synergies between them.
“Resilience and resonance in cycle tourism”
Focus 2020: City, region, digital! Bikes connect cities and regions via tourist cycle routes that extend beyond district and country boundaries, allowing regions to be explored. How can urban and rural areas learn from one another? What partnerships are needed and what digital data can help us to develop services in the pandemic era?
In the pandemic era, local tourism is growing and inhabitants are rediscovering their cities and reapplying their everyday mobility habits. This is naturally ideal for users with a cargo bike that they ride on a daily basis, but what do urban cargo bike cycle tourism projects look like? TRAVEL TALK presents examples from Milan, Berlin and Constance.
Many regions are switched on to cycle tourism and have been for some time. However, VISIT Limburg has created dedicated attractions, such as “cycling through the water” and “cycling through the woods” especially for cyclists. Is this the right way to go when there is increasing conflict between different user groups in woods and forests and on paths and trails? At TRAVEL TALK we will be talking to long-distance and mountain bike players from Switzerland, France and Austria about current challenges and the increase in conflict during corona times.
Linking up and connecting now mainly takes place online. Which digital tools do tourist regions need to support cycling tourism? Are digital solutions required for cycle holidays and to direct visitor flows in the pandemic era? TRAVEL TALK on 03 September will be providing a clear overview of all digital tools and looking at the solutions with a range of different players.

The focus 2020: City, region, digital. The bicycles connects cities and regions along touristic routes beyond district and country borders and enables us to experience space. How can urban and rural areas learn from each other experiences, what kind of partnerships are needed to overcome the crisis and how can digital tools help to navigate through various offers during the pandemic?
How can the cycling tourism be empowered after the Corona-Pandemic? The opening panel kicks off with a discussion from various countries with Iris Hegemann, Deutscher Tourismusverband (Germany), Darco Cazin, Allegra Tourismus (Switzerland), Agathe Daudibon Vélo & Territoires (France) and Anke Schäffner, Zweiradindustrieverband ZIV (Germany).
Keynotes, from Italy, Belgium and Switzerland will present divers cycling tourism concepts, that were modified during the Corona pandemic. From Italy Pinar Pinzuti reports how Milano transformed its way of how to address users and rediscovered the city inhabitants as tourists.
Ward Segers from Visit Limburg (Belgium) combines cycling infrastructure and tourism attractions in a creative way – cycling through water, cycling through the woods. Annina Coradi from Switzerland examines as a psychologist our behaviour as cycling tourists and focuses on a more connected approach in combining tourism, nature and society.
After the knowledge transfer sessions, the Lunch-Brake-Pitch from 12:30 pm onwards and the Barcamps from 14:00 pm onwards require your engagement and your active participation.
The Lunch-Brake-Pitch allows you to get to know a lot of diverse topics in a very short amount of time. Regarding cities we focus on cargobikes as a family friendly mode of transport, intercommunal recharging infrastructure and examine Berlin’s example of a cycling tour city. Regarding the regions we will look at the new long distance routes in France, alpine trials and sustainable mountainbiking in Bavaria. Regarding the digital topics we will provide an overview on necessary and reasonable tools and date for cycling regions. At the end you can choose from which topic you want to hear more.
In the Barcamps we will collaboratively work on solutions in urban, regional and digital cycling tourism, which intensified during the pandemic. The urban Barcamp focuses on the issues of transforming every day cycling behaviour with cargobikes into a functioning system for regions. We will focus availability, application and integration from cargo bikes as a family friendly and inclusive transport into cycling tourism concepts.
In the regional Barcamp the German Initiative Mountainbiken DIMB e.V. discuses i.a. with Gergana Nikolova, Regional Director Europe & Central Asia of the Adventure Travel Trade Association, which challenges and chances mountainbiking is currently facing in Europe.
And the digital Barcamp works on solutions for guiding the stream of visitors and coordinating trails and division of visitors.
