A DIN standard for cargo bikes was published in draft form in February 2019 and is due to enter into force before the end of this year. The DIN 79010 standard will define technical requirements and testing procedures for cargo bikes. A European EN standard for cargo bikes is also being planned. A “Cargo Bikes” working group within the European Institute for Standardization’s Technical Committee 333 which is responsible for bicycles is due to start work soon.

What does the DIN 79010 standard entail for cargo bikes and what does it mean for cargo bike manufacturers? When can we expect the EN standard to be introduced, and in what ways can cargo bike manufacturers have a say in it?
