France Walking Tour Map

The Dordogne region in Southwestern France is a sanctuary where 20,000 years of French history are preserved. See fossils, artifacts and renowned cave paintings of primitive wildlife by the Magdalenian peoples who flourished in Europe from 18,000 to 10,000 BC. Medieval castles, Romanesque churches and grand châteaux dot the landscape. The mighty Dordogne flows past dense forests, farmlands and riverbanks bursting with blooms.

Day 1 Les Eyzies
Rendezvous at the rail-station at Souillac for the drive to Les Eyzies, where Cro-Magnon Man was discovered in 1868. Visit the National Prehistory Museum, which houses one of the world's most complete collections of prehistoric artifacts. An aperitif in the hotel garden precedes an Introductory Talk and Welcome Dinner prepared by renowned chef, Pascal Lombard.

Day 2 Les Eyzies
A short walk through the village takes us to the famous Grottes de Font-de-Gaume, where we wonder at the cave-paintings. Dating from the Magdalénien period, their age is estimated at around 17,000 years and feature depictions of animals. We lunch with the locals in the village of Meyrals and return on forest tracks to our hotel, with time for a swim before we enjoy another culinary treat from Chef Pascal.

Day 3 Vitrac
Our journey this morning begins by the Dordogne River, weaving through tiny villages and forest paths to Beynac, inhabited since the Bronze Age and dominated by a 13th century castle. We stop here for lunch by the river and continue our walk to the park of the Château of Marqueyssac. After wandering through these remarkable gardens laid out on a rocky outcrop, we enjoy a refreshing drink on the terrace, a stunning panorama laid out before us. We drive to our hotel, the lovely Château de Rochebois with, maybe, time for a swim or a quick round of golf.

Day 4 La Roque Gageac
After breakfast, we cross the river and follow the poplar-lined bank through fields of corn and asparagus to the hilltop town of Domme, noted for its medieval architecture and perfectly preserved covered market. After lunch in the old square and time to browse the shops and admire the endless views, we walk down to the banks of the Dordogne where a traditional riverboat ferries us to the spectacular cliffside village of La Roque Gageac.

Day 5 La Roque Gageac
We explore La Roque Gageac and then follow the river to majestic Castelnaud, the largest and best restored of the region's castles. We visit Les Milandes, former home of the late, legendary American performer Josephine Baker, Queen of Parisian music-halls during the 1930s, where we enjoy lunch and a display of falconry. We walk on through walnut groves and return to our hotel for a pre-dinner aperitif by the river.

Day 6 Sarlat
After a leisurely breakfast, we set out for our morning's walk, our final meander in the gorgeous countryside. From our lunch stop, we walk on to Sarlat, the capital of the Perigord-Noir, a medieval town developed around a great Benedictine abbey. We have time to enjoy its cobbled alleys, perfectly preserved Renaissance architecture and quarter-timbered houses with stone roofs and, of course, its busy shops laden with the world-famous produce of the surrounding area. We meet for an aperitif and Farewell Dinner at our hotel in the center of town.

Day 7
In the morning, we can enjoy the bustling market where farmers and growers converge from miles around to provide a riot of color and sound and the scent of the countryside, before we say "Au revoir" at the rail station of Souillac.
